Essential oils 101

What are essential oils

Essential oil are concentrated oils from plants that are used for healing the mind, body and spirit.

Each oil has individual healing properties and no oil has a negative side effect if they are used correctly. For example, some essential oils are not to be used in early pregnancy or along side certain medication.

There are 5 different ways essential oils can be extracted from plants, the most common way being fractional distillation. However the way the oil is extracted greatly depends on the plant is it being extracted from. The oil and compounds captured from the plants are what give the oil the scent, flavour and healing properties.

It is interesting to learn that aromatherapy and essential oils have been used as far back as the Egyptians in the 3rd century!

How to use essential oils

Essential oils are most commonly used in Aromatherapy treatment. They can be mixed with carrier oils and used in aromatherapy massages, which are very beneficial for the mind, body and spirit. Your Aromatherapist will use oils and blends that are catered to you and your needs.

Along with this essential oils can be used at home.

A list of examples of how you are used essential oils are:

•Diffuse them in your home
•Burn aroma scented sticks
•Essential oil drops in your bath
•Essential oil drops on your bedding or clothes

  1. Loved this! I am happy that you showed multiple ways oils can be used, and that consuming them wasn’t encouraged too much!

  2. This is such a cool post. I love scented things like candles and have always wanted to burn essential oils to fill my room with pleasant aromas. I never knew eucalyptus oil and frankincense oil were good for arthritis – which I have – so I’d love to see how they’d work for me. I know lavender oil is used in pillow sprays which are supposed to help you sleep, which I’ve sometimes wondered about purchasing 🙂 thanks for sharing xxx

  6. Thank you so much for this post! I have a set of essential oils, all of the ones you mentioned apart from Ylang Ylang, and didn’t know half of this information about them. I’ve been neglecting my Frankincense essential oil but seeing how great it is, I’ll be sure to start using it.

  7. You’ve got some good ones here! I also really love almond oil as it smells wonderful in homemade soap.
